Lunar Eclipse by Kathy Buczynski In this picture you can see the shading due to the Earth’s shadow (at about the “four o’clock position”). Penumbral eclipses are not as dark as umbral eclipses, because the the Moon does not go through the darkest part of the Earth’s shadow.
