The Chester County Astronomical Society and its members have won many awards.







CCAS Group and Individual Member Awards


The Chester County Astronomical Society has won many awards since its inception in 1993. Listed below are society members who have achieved Astronomical League awards, their award numbers, and the date they were recognized.

Several members have also had articles published in national magazines.


Group Awards


  • July 1999 - Honorable Mention in Sky & Telescope magazine's annual National Astronomy Day Award for the Astro Day program on May 22, 1999 at the Flower & Cook observatory, which was organized and run by the CCAS and the FCO's Observatory staff.

  • July 2000 - Second Place in the Astronomical League's annual Mable Sterns Oustanding Newsletter Editor Award to Jim Anderson, CCAS Newsletter Editor.

  • Jan. 2001 - CCAS 20-inch telescope named the Edwin T. Lurcott Telescope in honor of CCAS Founder and Past President Ed Lurcott.

  • July 2001 - Second Place in the Astronomical League's annual Mable Sterns Oustanding Newsletter Editor Award to Jim Anderson, CCAS Newsletter Editor.

  • July 2004 - Second Place in the Astronomical League's annual Mable Sterns Oustanding Newsletter Editor Award to Jim Anderson, CCAS Newsletter Editor.

  • Jan. 2005 - NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory recognizes CCAS for "valuable contributions to its community in the areas of science and technology education and inspiration."

  • June 2005 - John Hepler named Astronomical League's 2005 "Webmaster of the Year" for his work re-designing and re-constructing the most outstanding website of all the ones submitted by the A.L.'s 265+ member societies.

  • April 2006 - President Kathy Buczynski announces Edwin T. Lurcott, CCAS Founder's Award for outstanding service to the Society.

  • April 2006 Jim Anderson is the first recipient of the Chester County Astronomical Society's Founder's Award.

  • June 2006 - First Place in the Astronomical League's annual Mable Sterns Oustanding Newsletter Editor Award to Jim Anderson, CCAS Newsletter Editor.

  • September 2008 - Bob Popovich is the second recipient of the Chester County Astronomical Society's Founder's Award.

  • May 2009 - Don Knabb is the third recipient of the Chester County Astronomical Society's Founder's Award.

  • May 2009 - Kathy Buczynski is the fourth recipient of the Chester County Astronomical Society's Founder's Award.

  • August 2009 - First Place in the Astronomical League's annual Mable Sterns Oustanding Newsletter Editor Award to John Hepler, CCAS Newsletter Editor & Webmaster.

  • July 2010 - John Hepler is the fifth recipient of the Chester County Astronomical Society's Founder's Award.

  • August 2016 - First Place in the Astronomical League's annual Mable Sterns Oustanding Newsletter Editor Award to John Hepler, CCAS Newsletter Editor & Webmaster.

  • March 2019 - Roger Taylor is the sixth recipient of the Chester County Astronomical Society's Founder's Award.
